The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
Jesus is the true light. A light enables us to see, it shows us the way things really are. He enables us to see God’s goodness. He enables us to see the world as it truly is. Yet with this he brings our sin into the light, exposing us and our dark thoughts and deeds. Our sin is exposed, laid bare in front of the creator, the true light. He enables us to see the world as it truly is, a world created as good by God yet ruined by sin, by our rebellion.
It is because Jesus exposes our sin that we reject him. Even though the world was made through Jesus, even though Jesus was there in the beginning before there was light, the world does not recognize him. Jesus the creator, Jesus the first light, is shunned by the world, treated as a criminal and put to death. Jesus was crucified because he is the true light who exposes our sin, our brokenness, our rebellion.
Yet it is through this rejection that God does away with our sin and darkness forever. Though Jesus exposes our sin, we prefer darkness and reject him. Through this rejection God offers a way for us to be restored. He offers a way to no long be in darkness, to leave our darkness behind. At the cross we see our rebellion dealt with. At the cross our rejection of God is dealt with.
As Christians we believe Jesus to be God made flesh. To be fully God and fully man. Read John 1 and think about what other part of the bible from the Old Testament it seems similar to.
John intends to draw a similarity to Genesis. He paints a picture of Jesus being the word of God at creation. God spoke the world into being, and Jesus is said to be this word. In Genesis sin enters the world when Adam and Eve reject God. Here though, by God’s providence, we are rescued from sin when the world rejects Jesus. Even though we wanted nothing to do we Jesus, by his death and resurrection with have life everlasting.
Thankyou for Jesus, the true light who gives light to everyone. Thankyou that at the cross he takes all our sin on himself. Thankyou that though we rejected him at the cross, you now accept us because of the cross. Thankyou that we no longer have to live in the darkness, but can be brought into the light because of Jesus.
In the light of Christ’s forgiveness, help us to love others still living in the darkness. Help us to bring them the message of forgiveness.
In Jesus’ name,
